Kodiak Island Housing Authority hosted their annual Tribal Housing Summit on June 13, 2023 and June 14, 2023.
All nine tribes had at least one representative from their tribe attend our Summit.
During the two-day event, we had the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Native American Programs, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, Rural CAP, Shauna Hegna, President of Koniag, and USDA share information, updates, and resources.

Tribal Housing Needs – Group Activity
Part of the challenges that KIHA faces is a shortage of land/property to purchase for new housing. While there are homes for sale, some of the homes island wide have met their useful life and require a tremendous amount of repair. Most homes on the market are overpriced and unaffordable for families to purchase. Some homes are being converted to Airbnb.
KIHA completed an island wide housing needs assessment in 2022. The assessment identified senior housing as an ever-growing need in Kodiak. The Alaska Development of Labor and Workforce Development forecasts that the borough’s population of residents 65 and older will peak in 2035.
KIHA has identified the need to build another 55+ senior housing property on near island. This could potentially open homes in Kodiak for families to rent or purchase.
