DISTINGUISHING FACTORS
The Summer Youth Aide is responsible for assisting the Youth Activities Coordinator (YAC) and Youth Activities Assistant with summer youth programs at the Family Investment Center (FIC) of the Kodiak Island Housing Authority (KIHA). This work includes the following: providing intensive supervision of high needs and high-risk factor youth participating in the programs; assisting the YAC with preparing and implementing summer activities and education opportunities; coordinating education activities; and operating in an active, energetic, and dynamic environment involving up to two dozen children.
This position is a temporary (summer) full time position. KIHA is looking for qualified aides who are willing to work five days per week. Work schedules are typically 10:00am to 6:00pm, Monday through Friday.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Experience with children required
- Experience with implementing conscious discipline
- An understanding of challenges and compassion necessary for working with youth facing barriers or disabilities.
- Required to have and maintain an Alaska Driver’s License.
- Experience working with special-needs youth a definite plus.
ABILITIES
- Must be 18 years of age or older (with one additional position reserved for a youth aged 15 to 17 years old.)
- Ability to handle loud and chaotic environments
- Ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults.
- Ability to interact with youth from a position of authority
- Ability and willingness to follow directions and receive constructive criticism and feedback.
